South Korea's minor carmaker Ssangyong Motor on Monday began shipping the first batch of its new sports utility vehicle Rexton W mounted with bullet-proof glasses and other special features that would be used by Peruvian police.

Under a deal signed in December last year, Ssangyong will export 2,108 Rexton W SUVs by September. Peruvian police would use them in 17 cities.

The upgraded four-wheel driving model is powered by a 3.2-liter gasoline engine and has bullet-proof glasses, a camera, a high-performance search light and other additional anti-crime functions.

Ssangyong, run by Indian auto giant Mahindra & Mahindra, said it would unveil a new Rexton W model in the first half of next year targeting overseas markets.

Ssangyong's sales in April grew 7.4 percent on-year to 13,462 units, driven by strong domestic demand for its Tivoli crossover SUV. In the first four months of this year, the company sold 47,128 units, up 4.0 percent from a year earlier.
