'The Handmaiden' hits 280,000 viewers on its opening day

"The Handmaiden", a film by South Korean director Park Chan-wook marked 280,000 viewers on its opening day in the Korean box-office Wednesday.

The film became famous for being invited to the Cannes Film Festival, even before its official opening and the movie fans' expectations were high. Already the online communities are flooding with debates and reviews regarding the film.

The Handmaiden is set in the 1930's Chosun dynasty under Japanese occupation. But the film is a remake of a novel "Fingersmith", written by Sarah Waters. The Handmaiden is about men and women set to deceive each other for gold and love.

Considering that the film is R-rated, its opening day record of 280,000 viewers is remarkable. With director Park's reputation to make good films and The Handmaiden's story already gone viral, the film is expected to become another R-rated film hit.
