Good news for the fans waiting for the sequel of "Pacific Rim", an action-packed film about gigantic alien-fighting robots. John Boyega from "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (TFA) will be taking the main role in the "Pacific Rim 2", the series' filmmaker, Legendary Pictures announced Monday.

According to the release from the filmmaker, Boyega is to play the son of Edris Elba from the original film. "“It is undeniable that with all his talent and natural charm, John stands out amongst today’s generation of young leading men," said Mary Parent, Legendary's vice chairman of worldwide production.

Boyega recently appeared in the new Star Wars film TFA and is currently shooting the next episode. He plays a role as stormtrooper Finn.

The original Pacific Rim, directed by Guillermo Del Toro, was released in 2013. The film grossed 411 million US dollars worldwide and created a strong fan-base. But the film underwent a continuous cycle of its sequel being cancelled and starting production over again. In February, the Legendary appointed Steven S. DeKnight to direct the sequel. DeKnight is the creator of hit drama "Spartacus" and Marvel's "Daredevil".

The sequel of Pacific Rim is due to be released in 2017.
