KT Music launched "Genie VR", a virtual reality (VR) music service on Thursday for the first time in South Korea.

Genie provides VR-dedicated contents such as live music stage and music videos (MV) created in VR format through KT's Genie VR service. Users can access the service with a VR headset or by using a smartphone to enjoy 360-degree VR contents.

Genie VR is a part of a "Giga VR" project launched by the KT group which will carry out investments and contents development for the VR service.

At a press conference, Nayeon and Jihyo from South Korea's popular girl group TWICE demonstrated VR on stage. A 360 degree VR view of the stage could be experienced with head-mounted displays.

"We aim to provide new experiences in enjoying music other than just listening and watching it," said KT Music president Kim Sung-wook. "Just by using a smartphone, users can experience music just as they are standing right next to an artist."

KT Music will provide more than 100 VR contents including music showcases as well as premium VR contents such as "Travel with an Artist" and "Recording with an Artist" by the end of the year.
