South Korea's Hyundai-Kia auto group is recalling some 300,000 vehicles sold in the United States because of hood latch problems, according to a US traffic safety agency.

Hyundai Motor America is recalling 81,000 Tucson SUVs, the US Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said in its recent recall summary.

"In the affected vehicles, if the primary hood latch has been released and the vehicle is driven, the secondary hood latch may not adequately secure the hood to prevent it from opening while the vehicle is in motion," NHTSA said. "The hood may unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a crash."

The Tucson SUVs recalled were built from May 19, 2015, to March 14, 2016. The recall is expected to begin on July 15.

The US branch of Kia Motors, a Hyundai group subsidiary, is also recalling 219,800 Sedona minivans for a similar hold latch problem, NHTSA said. The affected vehicles were built from June 15, 2005, through April 4, 2014.
