Buoyed by a positive consumer response to its previous gadgets, US tech giant Google may produce its own smartphone this year, according to a British newspaper.

Since 2010, Google has used smartphone makers to release a lineup of "Nexus" smartphones mounted with the Android operating system. With its design, development and marketing managed by Google, Nexus has built a solid fan base because its fully optimized settings make it reliable.

The Nexus series also get the fastest OS updates than any other Android OS smartphones. The latest models are the Nexus 5X from South Korea's LG Electronics and the Nexus 6P from China's Huawei.

The Telegraph, citing a senior Google source, reported that  the US tech giant plans to release its own smartphone by the end of this year. Google will take over the reign by controlling design, manufacturing and software of the new device, but it's now known whether the new device will carry the name of Nexus, the daily said.

The newspaper said that if the new smartphone stays in the Nexus lineup, Google's "reference" model would probably use the Android OS system.

Some fans were already skeptical about the quality of Google's new smartphone, although the company was recognized as a solid gadget manufacturer with the Pixel C, an Android tablet, and the Chromebook Pixel, a laptop pre-installed with Chrome OS, which have received positive feedbacks from consumers.
