An abstract painting of South Korea's pioneering artist Kim Hwan-gi has been auctioned off for 4.6 million US dollars, the highest price in the country's art history.

The painting, "Untitled 27-VII-72 #228 (1972)", is typical of Kim's style toward the end of his life when his work tended to consist mostly of dots.

At an auction in Seoul on Tuesday, the piece sold for a cool 5.4 billion won ($4.6 million), the most expensive painting ever sold in South Korea. The previous record was also one of Kim's pieces, sold for 4.86 billion won at an auction in Hong Kong in April.

Kim (1913-1974) was one of Korea's first-generation abstract artists. His artworks largely dealt with diverse hues and patterns and his later works were filled with lines and spaces.
