More than one-third of South Korea's married couple live without sex or just once for a month, compared to Japan's 44.6 percent that marked the world's highest, according to a survey published Wednesday.

Married couples would be classified as "sexless" if they do not have sex for more than a month without suffering any ailments.

Some 36.1 percent of married people in South Korea said they were often sexless or had sex once for a month, according to a survey of 1,090 adults, which was conducted by life insurer LINA Korea's magazine and the Korean Institute for Sexual & Couples' Health.

The survey found South Korea's sexless rate was ranked second in the world after Japan.

A Japanese survey published in early 2015 found that 44.6 percent of married people were listed as sexless mainly due to fatigue caused by long working hours, too much trouble, fear of intimacy and priority on hobbies.

Condom maker Durex, in its study of 41 countries, has ranked Japan at the bottom with its people having sex on average 48 times a year, compared to the global average of 103 times.
