South Korean tech giant LG and German carmaker Volkswagen have signed an agreement to team up and create an infotainment system for connected cars based on a cloud service platform.

The deal, disclosed on Wednesday, called on the two companies to  concentrate on:

• Developing technologies that bring together the connected car and the smart home so that drivers are able to control and monitor smart devices in their homes such as lights, security systems and domestic appliances from out on the road.

• Developing a context-sensitive notification center that can deliver messages in an intuitive and safe manner and provide optimized recommendations to the driver in real time.

• Developing next-generation infotainment technologies for connected cars.

Carmakers teaming up with tech firms to create smart cars or connected cars have been the trend in recent years. Volvo is working with Ericsson to create an infotainment system while BMW aims to bring fully smart and autonomous cars jointly with Intel and MobilEye.

Apple and Google have also jumped into the race.  Apple has developed "CarPlay", which connects a car to mobile devices, allowing the driver to control them using the car's audio unit or other displays. Android Auto is Google's counterpart.
