South Korea's top carmaker Hyundai Motors Thursday unveiled its new corporate guidelines on "smart leaders" that would be used as the entire staff to change their way of thinking and remove old practices.

Hyundai said its new guidelines would help employees boost creativity and work efficiently by breaking away from old habits and preventing the one-way flow of decisions and opinions.

The group, which includes South Korea's second largest carmaker Kia Motors, has called for a new corporate culture to change its image and weather tough competition in global and domestic auto markets. Its domestic market share has dropped gradually to 68 percent last year due to an increasing challenge by foreign brands which now control 15 percent.

The new guidelines are:
• Maintain survivability by becoming a leader in every way.
• Behave and speak carefully.
• Break away from Silo Minds.
• Create an environment to boost co-operation between departments.
• Break away from inefficient work customs.
• Every employee must be treated equally.
• Listen to what employees are saying.
• Praise and encourage employees.
• Provide employees with self-improving opportunities.
• Encourage employees to present fresh new ideas.
