Tammy Smith, a female US army brigadier general, assumed her duty Thursday as deputy commander of US troops stationed in South Korea.

Smith took command at a ceremony at the Seoul headquarters of the Eighth Army of the United States Forces Korea (USFK), the US military in Seoul said in a statement.

Her first mission is to lead the relocation of American troops to their new headquarters in Pyeongtaek, 70 kilometers south of Seoul, by the end of 2017, it said.
She had served as the director for human capital enterprise and the deputy chief of staff for the US Army Reserves.

Some 28,000 US troops are stationed in South Korea under a mutual defense pact dating back to the 1950-53 Korean War.
