South Korea's largest mobile messenger operator, KaKao, released a salon booking application Tuesday as part of a campaign to find a new source of cash cow online and offline.

Kakao Hairshop teamed up with 1,500 hair salons, the company said, adding the new app would be supported by 2,500 more by the end of this year. After registering credit and debit cards in advance, users can make reservations and payments by typing in passwords.

The app provides detailed information on hair salons including the career of each hairdresser and prices.

Backed by about 38 million people using the popular KakaoTalk mobile messenger, Kakao has diversified its business portfolio to broaden online-to-offline (O2O) choices for both supply and receiving end.

It launched Kakao Driver, a driver-for-hire service, in May and plans to add car parking and home cleaning to the O2O portfolio. Kakao, which has promised to step up the acquisition of good startups, saw brisk sales from its PC online game "Black Desert", but online ad sales remained sluggish.
