HanbitSoft, a South Korean computer game developer, said Friday it has forged a deal with a Chinese virtual reality gadget developer while undergoing a state project to develop augmented reality technology.

The Korean company said in a regulatory filing that it has signed a memorandum of understanding with Baofengmojing, a Chinese developer of headsets for virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR).

HanbitSoft, known as the Korean distributor of computer game StarCraft, saw its shares soaring this week. On Friday, its shares jumped 29.3 percent to 10,150 won (8.8 US dollars) on rumors about AR software.

The company said it has been involved in a government-sponsored project to develop AR technology. "We are developing a diverse genre of AR and VR games by combining our technology and intellectual property accumulated through this project," it said, promising to disclose details when it finalizes a contract with the Chinese company.

Software developers and content providers like HanbitSoft have gained attention this week following the successful debut this month of Nintendo's AR video game, Pokemon Go.
