South Korean students have collected five gold medals and a silver at the 47th International Physics Olympiad (IPO) to help their team share the first place with China and Taiwan.

A total of 387 students from 87 countries competed at the physics Olympiad last week in Zurich, Switzerland. South Korean gold medals came from five high school students: Hong Seung-ju, Kim Kyung-hun, Lee Won-suk, Kim Hyung-ju, and Jung Jeong-heum.

Russian stood fourth, India fifth, and Japan sixth.  The annual event, which started in 1967, was attended by students under the age of 20 with no university education.

"The ministry hopes that the students' achievement at the Olympiad become a motivation for other students to take interests in physics," a South Korean science ministry spokesperson said.
