Google took a step forward Tuesday in the battle against spam callers which have become a major nuisance in the smartphone era by releasing a spam protection feature for its Nexus and Android One smartphones.

Nexus and Android One smartphones are the reference phones developed and designed jointly by Google and third-party manufacturers such as Samsung, LG, and HTC. They are the first smartphone lineup to receive Google's updates.

According to Google's blog post, the new feature warns users about potential spam callers and provides the ability to block and report such numbers. This feature had previously been provided by third party apps, not by Google itself.

Many users welcomed Google's announcement. A Nexus smartphone user Malharr Kale commented on Google's blog: "Nice addition. Hope same is implemented into Messenger as well."

Some experts speculate that once a spam caller's metadata is registered onto Google's database, it would be immediately blocked my Google. However, the tech giant did not mention whether its spam blocking feature would be available for non-reference smartphones such as Samsung's Galaxy series and LG's G series.
