South Korea's football supremo Chung Mong-gyu has abandoned his bid to run for a seat on FIFA's decision-making council, citing his tight schedule, the Korea Football Association (KFA) said Tuesday.
Chung, who was elected last week to a second four-year term as KFA chief, has sent a letter to the world's football governing body, saying he would not run in a FIFA Council election on September 27, the association said.
Chung will lead South Korea's Olympic delegation to Brazil. The 37-member FIFA Council has replaced the FIFA Executive Committee as part of efforts to reform the scandal-stricken football body.
Instead of a FIFA Council seat, Chung hopes to be nominated as a vice president of the Asian Football Confederation. The CEO of Hyundai Development Co. served his first KFA term from January 2013 to June 2016.
