A subsidiary of South Korea's largest cinema chain, CJ CGV, said Tuesday that it has signed a letter of intent with Regal Entertainment Group of the United States to set up 17 additional 4DX movie theaters in US cities by the end of 2018.

The partnership between CJ 4DXPlex Co. and Regal Entertainment Group, one of the largest theater chains in the US, will raise the total number of 4DX-enabled Regal screens in North America to 20.

"With the continued success of our New York and Los Angeles locations, we are excited to partner with CJ 4DXPLEX to expand this immersive experience to additional Regal Cinemas throughout the country," Rob Del Moro, chief technical & theatre operations officer at Regal Entertainment Group, said in comments posted on the group's website.

Brandon Choi, COO of CJ 4DXPlex Americas, also said his company is excited to expand this immersive cinematic experience to other sites in the United States.

"From the success we've seen at the box office in Los Angeles and New York and from the overwhelmingly positive response we've received from audiences, we have no doubt that these 4DX theatres will soon become the hottest entertainment spots in the country," he said in comments posted on the same website.

Developed by South Korea's food and entertainment conglomerate CJ in 2009, 4DX theaters provide various chair-embedded sensory effects, such as puffs of air, scented mist, seat motion and vibration, requiring an array of special equipment.

There are now more than 34,000 4DX seats operating in 268 theaters in 41 countries, including South Korea, China, Japan and Mexico.
