South Korean archer Chang Hye-jin captured the gold medal in the women's individual archery at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics.
Chang defeated Lisa Unruh of Germany by the set score of 6-2 (27-26, 26-28, 27-26, 28-27). Each set consists of three arrows per archer. A set win is worth two points and a draw is one point. The first to six points wins the match.
This was Chang's second gold in Rio. She had earlier helped South Korea to the team gold medal. She is the first double gold medalist for South Korea in Rio.
South Korea has now won 22 gold medals in archery, which has overtaken short track speed skating as the biggest goldmine for the country in the Olympics, winter or summer.
A South Korean has won the women's individual archery gold medal in all but one Olympics since 1984. Earlier in the day, fellow South Korean Ki Bo-bae took the bronze medal.'
Against Unruh, Chang took the first set by hitting three straight 9s. The German came back to take the second set, which included her first 10 of the day, while Chang stumbled to an 8 with her final arrow.
The two traded 10s to open the third set. Chang then hit a 9 with her second arrow, and Unruh blinked first with a 7. Chang went on to take the set by one point, 27-26.
Chang hit back-to-back 10s to start the third set. Unruh hit three 9s, and Chang still won the gold with a closing 8. She said she surprised herself with the gold.
"I didn't come here expecting to win the individual gold," she said. "My mindset was to go out there and enjoy the competition as much as I can. And I did just that and I am satisfied with the result."
