Samsung Electronics has unveiled two models of its new wearable smartwatch "Gear S3" at an international trade show in Germany, featuring improved functions as well as a traditional look designed by renowned craftsmen.

Gear S3, introduced at the Internationale Funkausstellung Berlin (IFA), is available in two models: Frontier and Classic. The Gear S3 Frontier features more rugged look, ideal for outdoor uses.

Both are IP68 rated for water resistance, which means the smartwatches can withstand splashing, light rain, and be submerged underwater in depths less than a meter (3.2 feet) for a brief time. Gear S3 also features extra strong Gorilla Glass on its 360 x 360-pixel display.

The battery life was improved from its predecessor Gear S2 and its size grew from 250 to 380 mAh. Samsung said the battery would last up to three to four days. The iconic watch bezel from Gear S2 is still one of the main features of S3. Its users can navigate through the watch by turning it around.

The Frontier model has built-in LTE radio and GPS module as well as WiFi and Bluetooth to provide its users with continuous tracking data and connection to nearby smart devices. The Classic model is designed to be more suitable for urban uses, with only WiFi and Bluetooth connection.

However, Gear S3 is thicker than Gear S2 at 12.9 millimeters (0.5 inches) to the Gear S2's 11.4 millimeters (0.44 inches). Many experts said the increase was inevitable to house a larger battery, a GPS module, and an LTE radio.

Samsung said the Gear S3 will be available during October but did not disclose its price. Some experts predict the price will be somewhere around 350 US dollars.

Samsung has teamed up with watch craftsman and experts to design a unique outlook. The watch strap has been made of moisture-resistant and durable silicon material.

With functions to measure altitude, atmospheric pressure, and speed, users can write and send short text messages as well as urgent messages to family and friends.
