South Korea said Wednesday that it plans to host a trade fair for fishery products in China this week in the latest attempt to boost exports of Korean seafood to the world's most populous country.

A total of 12 South Korean seafood makers are set to meet with about 70 Chinese buyers about potential exports during the "K-Fish Fair," set to be held at a hotel in China's commercial hub of Shanghai from Thursday through Sunday, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries said.'

South Korea hopes its seafood makers can sign deals with Chinese buyers to export such items as dried seaweed, oysters and abalone. In June, the ministry hosted a similar trade fair for fishery products in Beijing.

Separately, the ministry said several other South Korean seafood makers plan to participate in the second Shanghai Wine & Dine Festival to be held from Friday through Sunday.

"We will make utmost efforts to boost exports of seafood to China," a ministry official said.

South Korea's seafood exports fell 6.87 percent to 1.92 billion US dollars in 2015 from a year earlier amid waning global demand. But shipments of dried seaweed jumped 11.3 percent on-year to $274.4 million last year, and those of oysters soared 44 percent to $95.9 million, according to government data.
