Samsung Electronics Co. unveiled a new storage device on Wednesday as it seeks to replace hard disk drives in ultra-thin laptop computers and other mobile gadgets.
The two-terabyte solid state drive (SSD) can transmit data equivalent to a two-hour high-definition movie per second and can save it in two seconds, Samsung said in a statement.'
SSDs are faster and thinner than conventional hard disk drives. The price for SSDs is expensive, but Samsung hopes that the new storage devices could gain a wider consumer appeal in the fast-growing memory devices market.
Along with the two-terabyte model, Samsung also introduced five other SSDs, which will be available for sale in 50 countries, including South Korea and the United States, from next month.
Samsung did not provide information on the exact price of the two-terabyte SSD, but "suggested" that the retail price of a 512-gigabyte SSD may start at 329.99 US dollars.
Kim Un-soo, senior vice president of Samsung's memory chip business division, said the company "is once again taking the next step in multi-terabyte SSD technology and the storage revolution, providing users with higher capacities and speeds than ever before".
