South Korea will consider approving the dispatch of Chinese police to the southern resort island of Jeju, which is attracting a large number of Chinese investors and tourists thanks to no visa accord, according to the foreign ministry.
Big-spending Chinese visitors have contributed much to regional economic development in Jeju, but public concern is also growing about their illegal activities and crimes.
The South's foreign ministry said Seoul is ready to hold talks with Beijing on the possibility of stationing Chinese police on the island if relevant authorities want.
"The issue of stationing Chinese police will be actively discussed with China after consultations with our relevant bodies if they so wish," the ministry said, adding that even if Chinese police come to Jeju, they will play a limited role.
