Google has unveiled new flagship smartphones "Pixel" and "Pixel XL", bragging in its presentation that Pixel cameras set a new record in a camera benchmark test, overtaking the previous record holder, Samsung's Galaxy S7 Edge.

The US tech giant said Pixel cameras scored the highest point of 89 in DxOMark Mobile's evaluation, compared to Galaxy S7 Edge's 88.

Traditionally, Samsung, LG, and Apple have scored high marks with good cameras installed in their latest smartphones. Samsung's camera used to be best for capturing superb images in low-light conditions.

The smartphone camera war has intensified in recent years as consumers regard high-performing cameras as a vital feature in buying smartphones.

Google is the newcomer in the race. The creator of Android smartphone operating system (OS) had produced smartphones jointly with leading smartphone makers but it now creates its own devices from the scratch.

The Pixel series, designed by Google and manufactured by Taiwan's HTC,  are fitted with 12.3-megapixel resolutions. Google said its new camera has the shortest capture time than any mobile devices ever along with gyroscope-based video stabilization.

"The Pixel’s strong scores under a wide range of conditions make it an excellent choice for almost any kind of photography," explained DXO Mark Mobile on how Pixel cameras scored the highest ever marks.

The sensor of Google's camera has 1.55 micron-sized pixels while Galaxy S7 Edge's sensor has 1.4 micron-sized. Larger sized sensor pixels can read more information from light coming into it, and create images with more details.

Many experts predict that the camera war is not likely to experience a huge leap in its technology in the near future due to limits on the size of sensors.
