At least three people were killed and three others were missing Wednesday as Typhoon Chaba skirted along South Korea's southern coast, dumping heavy rains and disturbing high-speed train schedules.
Heavy rains and floods damaged or inundated homes, factories, railroads, and power facilities in Busan and other cities along the south coast, according to the Ministry of Public Safety and Security. About 950 cars were waterlogged or damaged.
High-speed train services between Seoul and the southern port city of Busan were suspended for hours due to floodwaters.
In Busan, strong winds toppled a tower crane, killing a 59-year-old construction worker, and a 90-year-old woman died after being flipped off the second-floor balcony of her house. A fisherman went missing after being swept away by high waves. A makeshift iron parking structure collapsed, destroying seven cars.
On the southern resort island of Jeju, heavy rainstorms and strong winds grounded international and domestic flights. A fisherman was listed as missing while working on a fishing boat anchored at a dock. Two fishing boats and a yacht capsized or sank.
In the southeastern industrial city of Ulsan, Hyundai Motor suspended a production line in its flooded factory. A dozen other factories in Ulsan were flooded due to heavy downpours. In the nearby county of Ulju, a flash flood killed one person in an apartment complex and a firefighter went missing.
In Yeosu, three coastguard officers were injured in an operation to rescue the crew of a sinking ferry.
