The cumulative investment by SK hynix Inc., a South Korean chipmaker, into its plant in China is expected to surpass 10 billion US dollars this year, an industry source said.

SK hynix began building the plant in the Chinese city of Wuxi in 2005. By the end of this year, the cumulative investment into the Wuxi facility is predicted to stand at $10.5 billion, according to the source.

The Wuxi plant accounts for about half of SK hynix's DRAM output and has helped SK hynix avoid a potential trade dispute with the Chinese government.

Samsung Electronics Co. began production at its plant in the Chinese city of Xian in 2014. In 2012, Samsung announced it would invest $7 billion into the Xian plant. Samsung's investment into the Xian plant is also likely to be about $10 billion so far.
