The job approval rating of South Korean President Park Geun-hye has nosedived to a record low, a poll showed, after the country's first female president was battered by a corruption scandal involving her long-time crony and spiritual partner.
Park's job performance approval stood at 17.5 percent, the lowest point since she took office in early 2013, according to a survey conducted by research firm Realmeter.
The poll was carried out on Tuesday, a day after Park apologized following revelations that she had been under strong political influence wielded by a woman named Choi Soon-sil, allowing her to edit presidential speeches.
"President Park's job approval rating may fall even further," Realmeter head Lee Taek-soo told reporters, adding a weekly poll result to be released Gallup Korea will show a similar outcome.
Some 42.3 percent of those surveyed by Realmeter said the president should face impeachment or step down.
