Samsung Electronics has failed to track the cause of fire at its Galaxy Note 7, a top official said Thursday, suggesting more time is needed to complete a transparent investigation.

Along with an independent investigation, Shin Jong-kyun, president of Samsung's mobile division, said his company has inquired other reliable organizations including the US Underwriters Laboratory. Samsung embarked on a costly refund program after suspending global sales and production of its Note 7.

"A thorough investigation will take some time to finish," Shin said, adding Samsung has been checking every corner of the troubled phone and battery, including its hardware and software.

Of 1.59 million Note 7s shipped first, Samsung has officially acknowledged 85 cases of fire while 55 cases were detected out of 1.47 million phones shipped as replacements, he said.
