US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump said North Korea could be behind the hack of emails from Democratic officials, including Hillary Clinton's campaign manager, John Podesta.

Trump made the remark during a campaign speech in North Carolina on Wednesday, rejecting allegations that Russia could have orchestrated the series of email hacks in an effort to help him beat Clinton and win the White House in the November 8 election.

"First of all, I don't know Putin, have no business whatsoever with Russia, have nothing to do with Russia. And, you know, they like to say every time WikiLeaks comes out, they say this is a conspiracy between Donald Trump and Russia. Give me a break," Trump said.

"You know, number one, they don't even know it's Russia. Who knows? It might be Russia, could be China, could be, if you remember Sony, it could be North Korea, it could be a lot of places," he said without elaborating.

Trump was referring to the massive cyberattack on Sony Pictures in late 2014. The FBI determined at the time that the North was behind the attack as Sony planned to release "The Interview," a movie with a plot about assassinating North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.
