South Korea's sole aircraft maker, Korea Aerospace Industries, said Wednesday it has agreed with its Indonesian partner to cooperate for exports of helicopters and transport planes.

KAI said it signed a memorandum of understanding with PT Dirgantara Indonesia (PTDI) at the 2016 Indo Defence Expo and Forum in Jakarta. The agreement opened the way for exports of South Korea's Surion helicopters developed by KAI to Indonesia and other countries.

Indonesia has been involved in the joint development of CN-235, a medium-range transport aircraft, with a Spanish firm, as well as South Korea's military project to develop new home-made fighter jets

Indonesia has agreed to invest $1.3 billion in the fighter project in return for receiving one prototype plane and gaining access to some technical data and information. KAI said it would expand cooperation with Indonesia in maintenance, repairs, joint marketing, and the development of unmanned aerial vehicles.
