South Korean actor Uhm Tae-woong has apologized for his wrongdoing after he was fined for buying sex in a massage parlor.

"I sincerely apologize to my fans," the 42-year-old said in a statement released through his agency Wednesday after he was slapped with a fine of one million won (872 US dollars). "I'm sorry for all the disappointment and worries I have caused. I will repent of my wrongdoing for the rest of my life."

A 35-year-old woman had sued Uhm for raping her. But prosecutors found in October that she had lied, accusing her of conspiring with the massage parlor operator to blackmail the actor for money. Illegal brothels disguised as massage parlors are common in South Korea and many other countries.

As the brother of popular singer-actress Uhm Jung-hwa , the actor debuted in 1998. After years of small roles and work in one-act dramas, he began to gain recognition after his villainous turn in the romantic comedy Delightful Girl Choon-Hyang.
