North Korean leader Kim Jong-un has visited a military unit, ordering soldiers to raise their combat readiness, Pyongyang's state media said Wednesday, an inspection tour timed with the US presidential election.

The North's leader inspected a subunit of the Korean People's Army (KPA) Unit 1344, calling for commanding and staff soldiers to be on high alert, according to the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA).

The KCNA did not unveil the timing of Kim's visit, but it usually reports inspections made a day earlier by the leader.

Kim stressed the need for the military unit to conduct effective training, calling on it to "always think about combat preparations awake and asleep" on high alert, it said.

The report on Kim's military-related inspection came five days after the North's media reported his tour to a special operations military unit that was set up to eliminate key South Korean figures.

The latest inspection came as U.S. voters headed to the polls to elect Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump as their next president.

A Seoul official said Tuesday that North Korea would not feel safe about the results of the US presidential race as Washington is surely to place top priority on its security whoever wins the election.
