KT Corp., a South Korean broadband Internet and telephone company, opened an underwater cable covering South Korea and eight other countries in the Asia-Pacific region Wednesday for the 2018 Winter Olympics in the eastern ski resort of Pyeongchang.

KT said the optical fiber cable stretching 11,000 kilometers (6,820 miles) can transmit 60 terabytes (TB) of digital data per second. One terabyte is one trillion bytes.

The company will use the cable called "Asia Pacific Gateway" for a trial service of its new ultra-fast telecom technology for a 5G mobile network in Pyeongchang. On Tuesday, KT unveiled technological standards for its 5G service that transmit data about 100 times faster than 4G networks.

Next year, KT plans to open another cross-Pacific cable that would stretch up to the United States.
