South Korean shares fell 3.1 percent Wednesday as Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump clinched an early lead in the US presidential election amid growing jitters over a possible victory for the real-estate mogul and political outsider.

The benchmark KOSPI shed 62.70 points, or 3.1 percent, to 1,940.68 as of 12:30 pm (0330 GMT). The local currency weakened to 1,151.60 won against the greenback.

Market bellwether Samsung Electronics declined 3.1 percent and Hyundai Motor was down 2.53 percent.

Analysts said stock markets in South Korea and many other Asian countries favored Hillary Clinton on expectations that she could be stable in terms of policy continuity.
