US President-elect Donald Trump will further strengthen relations with South Korea, building their economies to the benefit of both sides while coordinating security concerns, a Trump adviser said.

"Mr. Trump will look to continue the strong friendship between our two countries. Our countries have strong national security and economic ties," Pete Hoekstra, a former member of the House of Representatives, said in a message released via the Korea Economic Institute in Washington.

"We will build on that relationship to grow our economies to the benefit of both countries. We will co-ordinate on national security concerns to deal with the evolving threats in region. This is a relationship that is important to both countries and will continue to be," he said.'

Trump's election cast uncertainly over the fate of the alliance between the US and South Korea because the real-estate tycoon has expressed deeply negative views of US security commitments overseas as well as a willingness to withdraw 28,500 American troops from the South unless Seoul pays more for the troops.
