South Korea's three public broadcasting companies – KBS, SBS and MBC, are authorized to start ultra-high definition (UHD) broadcasting from 2017 for three years, Korea Communications Commission said Friday. The communications commission aims to have the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics broadcasted in UHD.

Upon authorizing the public broadcasters to deliver UHD broadcasts at a general meeting, the commission chairman Choi Sung-joon urged the three broadcasters that they "create more UHD contents and be fully prepared to broadcast Pyeongchang Olympics in UHD."

UHD video provides four times sharper and clearer images than the high definition (HD). Because of its superb image quality, UHD video technology is widely used in the film industry and the sports industry. In 2016, Rio Olympics were filmed and broadcasted live in UHD format to many countries.

The commission said the UHD broadcasts will be available to Seoul and the cities surrounding the capital from February 2016. The service area will gradually expand to cover other major provinces and cities by December next year.
