A jobless man was sentenced to 18 months in prison Friday on conviction of  posting a message on the White House website threatening to rape the daughter of US President Barak Obama.

A Seoul criminal court said the 34-year-old college graduate surnamed Lee was found guilty of attempted intimidation and put under court custody. The man has failed to find a job, spending most of his day surfing the internet at home.

He was convicted of uploading posts on the White House's website in July last year from his home in Seoul, threatening to rape Sasha Obama and kill US ambassador to South Korea Mark Lippert.

Originally, Lee was on trial without being detained, but the court stressed that the US embassy took his messages as a "serious threat" to the US government, calling for punishment.

Kim Ki-jong, a leftist activist, attacked Lippert with a knife in March 2015, leaving him with deep gashes on his face and arm that needed more than 80 stitches. Kim was sentenced to 12 years in prison on charges of convicted murder.
