Nokia Corp, a Finnish communications and IT firm, has been selected to provide software and technology for a wireless broadband telecom network that will be used first for a rail line under construction for the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea.

Korea Rail Network Authority (KRNA), a railroad construction and management company, said Monday that Nokia would set up a network called LTE-R to support high-speed railway operations.

LTE-R is part of KRNA's project to modernize South Korea's rail communications network, which is based on LTE (long-term evolution), a standard for high-speed wireless communication for mobile phones and data terminals.

KRNA plans to introduce the LTE-R network next year when a new high-speed rail network linking Wonju with the eastern port city of Gangneung, a major hub of the 2018 Games in the eastern ski resort of Pyeongchang.

Construction of the 59-kilometer (35-mile) rail line is a key aspect of Pyeongchang's successful bid for the Winter Olympics as it will make visitors travel directly from Incheon west of Seoul through Wonju to Pyeongchang and then to Gangneung in about two hours.
