South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom Tuesday launched a test drive for the world's first connected car using a 5G network in a joint operation with German car giant BMW.

SK Telecom (SKT) showed its first connected car "T5" and demonstrated a test drive at BMW's driving center on Yeongjong Island off the western port city of Incheon. SKT and BMW agreed to cooperate in developing connected cars while working on creating a car with zero accidents. The company said its 5G connected car represented the first commercialization of a 5G network.

SKT and Ericsson, a global communications device maker, has built a 5G test network around the driving center's 2.6 kilometers (1.61 miles) long track to send and receive data with a speed of 20 gigabytes per second. It only takes one-thousandth of a second for the connected car to communicate with its server.

A car connected to a wireless internet network interacts and communicates with devices in and out of the vehicle, providing user-friendly services such as autonomous driving as well as optimized features like self-diagnosis, maintenance and driver customized settings.

The T5 communicates with its server using the 5G network. By using video recognition and vehicle communication technologies, it can evade obstacles on the road and engage in real-time communications with traffic lights and security cameras nearby.

SKT plans to set up and operate 5G test networks in urban areas next year. Global communication device manufacturers such as Ericsson, Samsung and Nokia will take part in the project.
