Hyundai Motor upgraded its connected car software Wednesday using Amazon's artificial intelligence voice assistant platform, Alexa, that would allow drivers to receive voice commands through smart devices.

As an option to its cars, Hyundai has provided Blue Link, a connected car system collecting and providing car care information. With a software upgrade, Alexa can be connected with Blue Link to remotely start a car, lock doors and search for destinations on Google. Voice commands can be ordered through Echo, a smartphone app, or smartwatches.

"From today, Hyundai owners can lock, unlock and start their vehicles remotely from the comfort of their couch, kitchen or bedroom using voice commands," Hyundai said in a statement. Vehicles equipped with the second generation of Blue Link will support Alexa.

Hyundai has stepped up efforts to catch up with rival firms which went ahead in the connected car industry. Last week, it disclosed plans to build its first global big data center in China's Guizhou Province mainly for the joint development of connected cars.

Connected cars, which can send and receive data to provide driver-friendly features such as autonomous driving as well as optimized features like self-diagnosis, maintenance, and driver customized settings, have become the hot potato.
