A Chinese fisherman was reported missing Tuesday when his boat with eight people aboard sank due to high waves off the southwestern port city of Gunsan, coastguard authorities said.
Seven fishermen were rescued by another Chinese boat, the South's coastguard said.
Two fishing boats had been operating together under a maritime accord between Seoul and Beijing in waters southwest of Eocheong Island at 2:20 pm (0520 GMT) when an 81-ton trawler sank due to strong winds and high waves, the coastguard said.
A 3,000-ton vessel has been dispatched for a rescue operation at the request of Chinese authorities, it said.
