Samsung Electronics is interested in acquiring QD Vision, a US leader in quantum dot technology used for high-definition televisions, a senior company official said Wednesday.

Chung Chil-hee, president of Samsung Advanced Institute of Technology, told reporters that the leading producer of smartphones, microchips, and displays would seek to acquire the American company headquartered Lexington, Massachusetts.

QD Vision, founded in 2004 by researchers from the world-renowned Massachusetts Institute of Technology , is the leader in quantum dot technology, a superior next-generation alternative to LED and OLED displays.

Samsung has increased its investment in the production of quantum dot TVs which offer better picture quality and cheaper manufacturing costs than OLED TVs.
