South Korea's 25th nuclear power plant was put into commercial operation Tuesday, using a new home-made reactor called "APR 1400" which has been exported to the United Arab Emirates.

With the new plant in the southeastern county of Ulju, nuclear energy accounted for 22.1 percent of South Korea's total power production, according to Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Co.

APR 1400 is the same model that would be used in the nuclear power complex under construction in the United Arab Emirates. Under a $20 billion contract in 2009, South Korea has been building four reactors with a combined capacity of 5,600 megawatts in the Middle Eastern country.

South Korea, which has almost no reserves of fossil fuels on its territory, has actively pushed for a nuclear energy program. The 2009 contract paved the way for South Korea's first exports of home-made reactors.
