South Korea's public wireless internet connection speed has increased by an average of 57.5 percent from a year ago, maintaining its status as the fast distributor of public WI-FI (local area wireless connection).

Thanks to upgrades made to major distribution networks in subways and other public places such as traditional markets, users can now download an hour worth of full HD video files in less than ten minutes using public WI-FI networks, the Ministry of Science said Wednesday.

Government data showed the public WI-FI network's average download speed this year increased to 144.73 megabytes per second from 91.87 megabytes per second last year. The network's upload speed has also increased by 65.9 percent.

Seoul's average public WI-FI download speed is about three times faster than that of New York's and about 30 times faster than that of Beijing's.
