Six out of 10 South Korean cancer patients who used to drink have consumed alcohol during treatment without being aware of their high-risk habit, according to a study conducted by a medical researcher.

The study of 906 cancer patients, conducted by Koh Hyun-young of Samsung Medical Center, showed that 60.3 percent drank alcohol even after being diagnosed with cancer while 39.7 percent said they stopped drinking.

Alcohol consumption has been blamed for a higher risk of numerous cancers, but the study showed many think one or two glasses of drinks are fine or consider drinking as part of their social life, said Koh.

The study found that 27 percent of cancer patients were heavy drinkers, he said, suggesting an aggressive medical program should be implemented to dry cancer patients out.
