A virtual reality drama will make its debut in honest this month in South Korea, starring members of two popular K-pop bands in a bid to attract young fans.

SBS, a major TV station, said it has kick-started two VR projects involving its best entertainment producers, "Idol VR Drama" and Inkigayo 360° VR", heralding the advent of a virtual reality (VR) era in South Korea's broadcasting community.

The first episode of  Idol VR Drama starring girl group MAMAMOO and boy group ASTRO will be aired in January.  The producers of Inkigayo, which has been an iconic weekly live music ranking show, plan to have it broadcast live in 360 degrees VR format.

"We wish to break down a prejudice that VR devices do not have many contents to watch," said Bae Sung-woo, an SBS entertainment producer. "SBS' VR contents will gain their unique value by drawing young fans of MAMAMOO and ASTRO."

VR contents have become a hot trend since 2016 after devices like Samsung's "Gear VR" were released. VR contents including movies, games, and interactive entertainment apps gained attention but did not make any noticeable success due to high prices.

The trend changed last year when cheap devices using smartphones were released, pulling down the cost barrier and drawing new users into the VR world.
