A carrier packed with thousands of South Korean cars has been seized by Libyan militants for violating their territorial waters, reports said Tuesday.

The car carrier, Morning Compass, was held at a Lybian port after it was seized last Saturday, Yonhap News Agency said, adding there was no Korean sailor aboard the ship, which was carrying 5,107 cars produced by South Korea's Hyundai Motor and its affiliate Kia Motors.

Yonhap said the South Korean embassy in Tripoli is in contact with Libyan authorities. Morning Compass, a 58,767 gross ton ship built in 2013 has been sailing under the flag of Bahamas.

Maritime Herald, a journal about shipping, offshore, logistics and business, reported the carrier was seized by Marshal Khalifa Hafter militants off Susah, en route from South Korea to Misrata.  The vessel sailed into Lybian waters after ignoring warnings from the militants, it said, adding all the crew is safe and in good health.
