South Koreans have a habit of adding nicknames to popular things. For example, Galaxy Note 7 was nicknamed "Jay Y. Phone" as Samsung's de facto leader, Jay Y. Lee, was known to have participated in smartphone development. Such epithets are sometimes used for popular products.

LG's new flagship smartphone G6, released on March 10, has gained a nickname "Impeachment Phone", a rather unusual but timely title given the impeachment of former president Park Geun-hye who was expelled from office.

Similar to other nicknamed products, "Impeachment Phone" is popular. LG sold some 30,000 units during the weekend after a court endorsed Park's impeachment. In addition, G6 pulled 820,000 pre-orders last week. This is a great achievement as LG was pushed out of the list of the world's top five smartphone makers last year. Samsung posted 400,000 pre-orders of Note 7 in South Korea last year.

Experts speculate LG will throw in everything to boost the sale of G6 before Samsung releases its new flagships Galaxy S8 and S8+ at the end of March.
