Fried chicken delivery orders spiked over the weekend as South Koreans celebrated the impeachment of President Park Geun-hye with their soul food.

When the constitutional court ousted Park Friday for her role in a corruption scandal, many citizens ordered fried chickens nationwide to enjoy a joyful time. Orders made through three major mobile delivery agencies – Baedal Minjok, Yogiyo, Baedaltong -- increased by an average of 61.6 percent over the weekend.

Baedal Minjok received over 150,000 delivery orders Friday and other delivery orders for pizza, Chinese food and snacks also increased 25 percent from a week ago.

Fried chicken did not originate from Korea but it is now considered "Korean soul food". "Chimaek", a compound word which means chicken and beer in Korean, is also a favorite menu for many adults.

More than 70,000 fried chicken restaurants are searched on Naver, South Korea's largest search portal, compared to about 36,900 restaurants run by McDonald's globally.
