An autonomous car, created by South Korea's largest search portal service Naver, was introduced Thursday at an international motor show in Seoul. The vehicle recognizes traffic around it and sets an optimized course by changing lanes, using AI (artificial intelligence) deep learning abilities.

The self-driving vehicle, developed by Naver's subsidiary "Naver Labs", an AI research group, was showcased on the media day before the opening of the 2017 Seoul Motor Show on Friday.

Naver's autonomous car is capable of driving itself to designated places but requires human intervention when it's faced with cases of emergency such as an emergency stop or an encounter of unexpected on-road obstacles. It maneuvers around with help from a sensory unit placed on its roof.

"By adopting our visual recognition technology and deep learning, we have accelerated the speed of research and development," a Naver Labs official said. "Naver's competitiveness in the autonomous market is its ability to develop cost-effective and high-performing technologies based on machine learning."

Naver aims to develop an advanced self-driving system which requires no intervention by drivers. The company is in its R&D phase using data collected through test driving.

For comfort and safe driving, a new AI-based infotainment platform, "IVI", provides Naver's map services along with weather information, music and radio services. It is capable of understanding and providing information through voice.

Despite its reputation as the producer of world-class carmakers and a most advanced mobile communication infrastructure, South Korea is the latecomer in the connected and autonomous vehicle market. At home, Naver and Samsung,  the two leading players, face a tough challenge from Chinese rivals and US electric vehicle giant Tesla.
