Hyundai Motor plans to produce small Accent cars for US consumers in Mexico in an effort to step up the production of its first compact sport utility vehicle (SUV), Kona, at home.

Hyundai said its 2018 Accent for US clients would be produced in Mexico this summer instead of the company's home base in the southeastern industrial city of Ulsan. Accent has been Hyundai's popular subcompact car, accounting for nearly 19 percent of all cars shipped abroad for four decades.

The relocation is aimed at using Hyundai's Accent line in Ulsan for the production of Kona, which will be unveiled in June. Hyundai is relatively weak in the compact SUV market, which has seen explosive growth at home.
